What Is Unity?
Unity began as a movement in the late 1800’s when Charles and Myrtle Fillmore started sharing their experiences of self healing with their friends. Charles was a silver prospector and a real estate broker in Kansas City. Myrtle, his wife, had suffered from tuberculosis since she was a child. At a difficult time in their lives, they attended a lecture that transformed them. Myrtle left the meeting knowing that she was a Child of God and, therefore, did not have to inherit illness. Myrtle began reading the Bible and praying daily. After two years, she was healed of tuberculosis and was no longer an invalid. Charles was healed of a withered leg and related illnesses. They also overcame financial problems, as well as other difficulties.
The Fillmore’s saw Jesus as the Master Teacher and felt their understanding was a return to Jesus’ original teachings that perhaps others had not fully understood. They called it Practical Christianity because they taught principles that when applied led to transformation of lives. They did not set out to establish a church, but rather an educational system, teaching principles of Truth.
Charles and Myrtle established teaching and ministerial training programs, Silent Unity, a 24-hour prayer service, and published spiritually uplifting books and magazines, such as Unity Magazine and the Daily Word. Their legacy lives on, and today there are approximately 1000 churches, centers, and study groups world-wide, with people numbering in the millions who are part of the Unity Family.
